There are three ways to discover the most fertile days of your menstrual cycle and increase the likelihood of becoming pregnant. This can be done by the testing of cervical fluid, identifying the position of the cervix and by the BBT (basel body temperature) method.

The first way is to learn about your vaginal secretions. Cervical mucus secretions, which is secreted by the cervix and can usually mean fertility. During your menstrual cycle, the linings of the cervix produce mucus in large amounts, but after menstruation the mucus production is minimum.

The mucus is thick and murky, but in the middle of the cycle it becomes clear, slippery and flexible which occurs a day before ovulation and means when you are most fertile.

You can check the mucus to feel and see the difference. Do this by wiping the vagina before urinating and softly placing your fingers into the opening of your vagina and gathering some of the mucus. Take note the consistency, the color and the elasticity of mucus. If the mucus stretches by spreading the fingers without breaking and is light in color, this is a sign that you are fertile.

The second way to check the status of your fertility is to know the position of your cervix. Start by checking its location at the end of the period and every day at the same time to track your fertile periods. The cervix is usually in a lower position at the beginning of the cycle and transfers to a position much higher just before and during ovulation. Check the position of your cervix by gently inserting the middle finger in the vagina. The cervix can be identified by its rounded cylindrical mass.

The third way to check the status of your fertility is by measuring your BBT. BBT is the reference temperature of the body. BBT is lower normally at the first part of the cycle, but on the day of ovulation the temperature rises slightly. It will then stay at that level until the beginning of your next cycle or continue to stay slightly higher if you are pregnant.

The BBT should be taken when you wake up and needs to be the first thing you do when you get out of bed. You can use any type of handheld thermometer but this should be done with the extreme care as to attain the desired outcome. You should chart your results so you can see the natural variations of the temperature of your body. As you go through your cycle you will be able better understand and determine when you are most fertile.
